Significance of Wuzu

Level 1 – Meaning of Wuzu

Wuzu is a compulsory pre requisite for praying namaz. It means washing and doing maseh (lightly sliding wet hands over) of specific body parts with water in a particular manner and order as a religious rite (ablution).
In the Quran e Majeed, Allah Ta’aala says:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ ۚ

’ya ayyohal lazeena aamanu iza qumtum ilas salaate faghselu wujoohakum wa aydiyakum ila l maraafeqe wam sahu be ru oosekum wa arjolekum ilal ka’bayn’.

Oh mumineen, when you get ready for namaz, first wash your faces and hands and do maseh over your heads and feet.

Most importantly one needs to intend doing wuzu (niyyat). Washing the face and hands and performing other actions of the wuzoo without taking niyyat first is not accepted as proper wuzu.

Water for Wuzu::

Both sea water and fresh water are suitable for wuzu.


Level 2 – Significance of Wuzu:

Wuzu is an essential part and pre-requisite of prayer in Islam and an integral part of tahaarat, cleanliness. Tahaarat is the second of of the seven di’aamat (pillars) of Islam,

1. Walaayat 2. Tahaarat 3. Salaat 4. Zakaat 5. Sawm 6. Haj 7. Jihaad

Tahaarat in its literal zaahir meaning is pakeezgi – purity [to clean one’s self from any najaasat (inherently dirty substance) using water]. There is also a deeper meaning of taweel (esoteric meaning) present within all ahkaam (rules and guidelines) of Shareeat (the Islamic way of living shown by Rasoolullah SA).

Wuzu is a compulsory pre requisite for namaz. In other words, namaz can only be prayed if one has completed wuzu. Wuzu once done remains valid only as long as one abstains from passing any air/substance from the farj ( private parts) and does not fall into a deep sleep, in which case one needs to perform wuzu again before praying namaz. All five namaz can be prayed after having done wuzu only once, if required providing wuzoo remains valid.

Aspects of Wuzoo:

  1. Having the intention to do wuzoo in the heart and pray “Bismillah”
  2. Using clean namazi water
  3. Going to the toilet and cleaning private parts, and then wash your hands
  4. Do action of taking niyyat and praying doa for intention of doing wuzoo
  5. Using water to clean the mouth and cleaning teeth as prescribed
  6. Using water to wash the nose
  7. Washing the face; while washing pass fingers through the beard, and make sure sure that the eyes are also rinsed
  8. Washing both hands up to and including the elbows; While washing both hands rotating the ring in the finger to make sure water reaches below the ring
  9. Maseh of head
  10. Maseh of ears, using water to clean both ears from inside and out
  11. Maseh of neck
  12. Maseh of feet up to the ankles

General Instructions:

Starting with the right hand and foot before the left one
Washing the face and hands more than once – two or three times
Completing all actions in the order prescribed and without intended interruption

Water for Wuzu:

The Da’aaim ul Islam states that the water used to do wuzu should come from a source which is at least cubic feet 64. The water should be not contain any contaminants which might change the taste, colour or smell of water. Flowing water in streams and rivers and the sea is also namazi.


Level 3 – Da’aaim ul Islam and Kitaabu ut Tahaarat:
The kitaab Da’aaim ul Islam was written during the time of Moiz Imam (the 14th Imam who built the city of Cairo) by Syedna Qazi al Nu’maan who was the Dai l Duat and Qazi l Quzaat (Chief Dai and Chief Judge) of the Fatimid Empire. The kitaab consists of two volumes, the first one explains in detail about the seven Di’aamat of Islam in seven chapters, each chapter is dedicated to one Di’aamat and includes a number of sub sections. This kitaab is the main book of Fiqh (Jurisprudence) used within Dawat today.
There is a complete chapter in the first volume of the Da’aaim which consists of detailed bayaan on Tahaarat and includes Wuzoo.
Syedna Qazi al Numan has also written kitaab ut Tahaarat which is a book covering detailed aspects of wuzoo – its meaning and significance, how wuzoo needs to be completed, what kind of water is to be used, what alternatives are there if one does not have access to water…

Fazeelat of Wuzu
Every word of Rasoolullah is filled with wisdom and meaning. It is upto mumineen to seek an understanding of the deeper meaning in the words of Rasoolullah through his Dai in order to deepen their conviction in living according to Rasoolullah’s Shari’at.

Rasoolullah says that, ‘One who –

  • Completes properly and thoroughly all the arkaan (actions) of wuzu
  • Prays his namaz properly
  • Gives zakaat from his earnings
  • Controls his temper
  • Is careful with his words
  • Does good deeds
  • Repents from his sins and asks for forgiveness from Allah
  • Sincerely loves and wishes well for my children (Imams)

He has successfully fulfilled all requirements of Eemaan and the doors of Jannat are open for him. Rasoolullah says that, ‘The sins of a doer of wuzu (in it’s true/complete sense ) fall away just as leaves (in autumn) fall from a tree.

Tayammum:

The Shareeat of Rasoolullah is suitable for all times and ages and provides flexible alternatives for situations where the norm cannot be followed for any genuine reason.
The Quran says that:

فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا

‘fa in lam tajedu maa an fa tayammamu saeedan tayyeban’ [if you do not find water (for wuzu) then use dust/sand to do tayammum.

Tayammum consists of laying one’s palms over dry soil and then lightly sliding them over the face and knuckles of both hands. Then passing the fingers on face from the forehead downwards. This doa is prayed while putting one’s hands on the dry soil.

Wuzu with English Transliteration

Mumineen are urged to take the effort to learn dawat ni zaban which is the primary language of Dawat today. The purpose of the transliteration provided here is only to facilitate a correct understanding of the pronounciation of words in duas of wuzu for mumineen who do not know how to read Dawat ni zaban. It is not supposed to be an alternative for learning the language.

Wuzu with English Translation

(Fajr niyyat)

O Allah, my Keeper, I make my intention to cleanse myself for the prayer of the morning sunnat namaz and the farizat namaz, and for each namaz I pray.

(Zohr Asar niyyat)

O Allah, my Keeper, I make my intention to cleanse myself for the prayer of the zohr and asr (afternoon) namaz and for each namaz I pray.

(Maghrib Isha niyyat)

O Allah, my Keeper, I make my intention to cleanse myself for the prayer of the maghib (dusk) namaz and the isha namaz (after maghrib) and for each namaz I pray.

Explanation/parents/teachers’ guide of how to use parts of the wuzu module

As you follow the brief guiding tips below make sure you take responses from the children in a positively encouraging way. Be disciplined with balance and kindness and do not scold the child if they get it wrong. Try and understand why they made the mistake and solve it compassionately. Allow and encourage them to ask questions and to feel at ease about it. Praise any attempts to achieve targets, even if they are not perfect. This not only facilitates a learning environment with good outcomes, but provides vital feedback towards developing the child’s learning and creates motivated learners.

Arabic Audio:

This resource includes a full audio of the Arabi wuzu of how it should be prayed. Use this at the early stages when children are young and just beginning to learn the wuzu.

By using the audio flexibly by stopping it at any stage, in the middle of a particular action part, or at the end of each, it can be used in a number of ways:

  1. To demonstrate and acquaint:
    1. Introduce the child to the wuzu without putting too much pressure of memorization, play the audio and demonstrate the wuzu with actions (the teacher/parent) can also recite. Allow the child to copy you as much as possible. The child will begin to pick things up, and when you feel they are ready, move to memorization as described below.
    2. Use water if you like.
    3. This is also a useful way to revise after memorization (see below)
    4. The child is not required at this stage to repeat the actions to great accuracy.
  2. For Memorization:
    1. Ask the learner to recite after the audio loudly and with care of pronunciation.
    2. Break the ‘immediate learning portion’ into a digestible bit, i.e. a short phrase or chunk of language. It could be as short as 2-3 words, as a language chunk.
    3. Repeat this language chunk with the child 5 times, and see if they can now repeat it without error. If not get them to repeat it 5 more times.
    4. Move to the next language chunk and repeat.
    5.  Assimilate 2-3 language chunks as learnt, to see if the child can remember the whole, in the correct sequence.
    6. Once the whole section of a particular action is learnt in this way, see if the child can repeat it. If not, it might be advisable to target the specific area within it which is causing a problem and revise it in the manner described above.
    7. Make sure the child doesn’t get too strained or tired if there is an area where they are getting stuck. It is better to stop before this. Reflect on the problem and try to find solutions.
  3. Revision:
    1. Each time you sit for learning, it is extremely important to revise previous portions as significant part of the time spent.
    2. This can be done by the method described above, and checking for accuracy
    3. Or it can be done by an overall teacher/audio lead follow and recite (together). This sometimes takes the pressure of always having to reproduce accurately, but also achieves revision.
  4. For Revision for children who are proficient.
    1. This resource can also be used for quick revision for children who know the wuzu to a high degree of accuracy in both its words and actions.
    2. This can be parent/teacher guided
    3. The child can also self revise in this instance
  5.  Children at this level should be at level 1 of concepts and meanings.

Video:

This resource can be used for in-depth teaching of the actions and words of the wuzu. Children being taught through this resource should be at a stage that they can give heed to the actions and their precise fulfillment. Use the audio flexibly by stopping it at any stage, in the middle of a particular action part, or at the end of each.

  • It can be used as a demonstration
    • In a ‘dry’ environment, but parents/teachers should then also check the performance of children with water.
    • Stop and start the audio/video as necessary at the end of clips or in the middle as required to make learners’ actions and words precise.
    • Children can use the resource independently if the parent/teacher feels they can. Usually this is at the revision stage.
  • Children at this level should be at level 2 of concepts and meanings.

Dawat ni zaban/English meaning:

This resource can be used with older children who are ready to learn the overall meaning of the wuzu, and after they have memorised and can reproduce its recitation.

  • Discuss the meanings and create an awareness in the learner of the meaning of their words and actions.
  • Whilst Dawat ni zaban translations and English translations are provided, we encourage use of only the Dawat ni zaban translation where possible, but if the child needs English, to support the understanding, we encourage reflection on the corresponding Dawat ni zaban translation and focussing on salient points and words, to build Dawat ni zaban understanding.
  • This resource can be used in conjunction with the audio and video of the wuzu recordings for reference and for revision and consolidation of the already learnt parts.
  • It is desirable for children to have this ability before they progress to level 3 of the reasons meanings and benefits.
